The Kondi Technique: A Living 1,200-Year-Old Handloom Craft
Originating in the town of Ilkal in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka around the 8th century AD, Ilkal sarees are famous for their unique interlocking warp technique known locally as Kondi or Tope Teni.
Unlike machine prints, the artisan physically joins the warp of the body and the warp of the pallu through a complex loops-locking process. The signature red pallu has three solid bands and temple motifs named Chikki Paras, creating a drape that has been honored by generations of royalty and bridal families.
